Directing

Direction
Direction is telling people what to do and seeing that they do it to the best of their ability. It includes making assignments, explaining procedures, seeing that mistakes are corrected, providing on-the-job instructions, and, issuing orders.
Elements of direction:
o        issuing orders that are clear, complete and within the capabilities of subordinates to accomplish.
o        continuous training activity in which subordinates are instructed to carry out the particular assignment in the existing situation.
o        motivation of subordinates to try to meet the expectations of the manager.
o        maintaining discipline and rewarding those who perform properly.
Features of Direction:

Characteristics of a Good Order:
§     The order should be stated in unambiguous and clear-cut words to be easily understood by the subordinate.
§     The order could be accomplished within the authority given to the subordinate. The order should be reasonable and the subordinate should have the capability to execute it.
§     The order should be in written form, particularly if it is of a non-routine nature.
Efficient Direction:
1.                  Enlists maximum cooperation from the workers.
2.                  helps in decreasing cost and increasing efficiency of workers.
3.                  is acceptable to all without dissent
4.                  serves the interest of both the workers as well as the enterprise
Principles of Direction:

Supervision:
It means observing the subordinates at work to see that they are working according to plans and policies of the organisation and keeping the time schedule, and to help them in solving their work problems.
Supervisor:
A supervisor is a person who is primarily in charge of a section and its employees and is responsible for both the quantity and quality of production, for the efficient performance of the equipment, an for the employees in his charge and their efficiency, training and morale.

Functions of supervisor:
